SCULPTOR VALERY PCHELIN GOT THE IDEA FOR HIS DRIFTERS 10 YEARS AGO. AT FIRST THEY WERE OBJECTS WITHOUT A NAME. WHAT HE WAS AFTER WAS A FORM BOTH ULTIMATELY INTEGRAL AND DIFFICULT TO BUILD.
HE WOULD START WITH A SKELETON, THEN CLOTHE IT IN FLESH. HE CONSTRUCTED THE BOTTOM FROM LARGER PARTS. DETAILS BECAME PROGRESSIVELY FINER, MORE ETHEREAL ON THE WAY TO THE TOP.
IT WAS IMPORTANT TO GET THE ARCHITECTONICS RIGHT.
EVERY DRIFTER IS EMPTY INSIDE – FILLED, AS IT WERE, WITH SOUL/ENERGY. THIS SPACE INSIDE MAKES THE DRIFTERS LIGHTER THAN THEY WOULD BE WERE THEY SOLID WOOD.

Valery used to saw all his timber himself until a Pchelin family friend discovered a small furniture workshop on the outskirts of Krasnodar with mounds of wood scrap outside. Those wood rejects suited Pchelin perfectly, so he made a deal with the factory to come and collect them at set intervals. It made him feel good to save throwaway wood from a fire or stove and give them a new lease on life.

It took him a while to achieve the right black color for his Drifters. Valery was looking for a pigment to give his works an anthracite effect: neutral black, coal-black. He used to char the surface. Now he saturates it with black pigment, covers it in oil, and then, after it has dried, waxes it to get a glossy, oily surface pleasant to the touch.
