«For me, every piece of wood is my co-creator.
I have used wood in various combinations. I’ve started with a single piece of wood and removed everything that was unnecessary, and I have also combined numerous fragments of wood into a whole, like shipbuilders join together the hulls of ships from different pieces -- using frames, calculating the system of distributing weight, tension, and compression, taking into account the physical properties of the various species of wood»

The method of joining, constructing the form using either woodworking or carpentry techniques, has over time become fundamental in Pchelin’s art. His drifters — monochromatic objects that exemplify his current plastic language — are the result of the advances he has made in this method

In maritime jargon, a «drifter» is a fishing boat or a sail, while everyday use indicates a person who is constantly moving from place to place. Thus the association with shipbuilding is not random. The multi-layered structure of Pchelin’s drifters, made from Oriental beech, recalls cliffs in which thousand-year-old compressed layers are interspersed with hollows that have been blown away by the wind, while their silhouettes resemble ancient, long-extinct plants. One might equally justifiably see in these drifters fantastic, disturbing aliens from horror films that give rise to feelings of intense apprehension; in the eyes of their creator, however, this represents life itself.

When explaining the mythology of his creation, Valery Pchelin calls these drifters wandering travellers: «Everyone drifts along their path in life. We drift along, accepting some things, rejecting others, and from this our story is built».
-
Born ten years ago on the idea level, today these drifters, with their unlimited variation in shape, have grown into an independent class of object. Drifter-like pieces are perfectly capable of being scaled up in size, and in time will surely grow to monumental dimensions, capable of containing people within and allowing them to pass through.
