Orpheus was almost a deity. When at the end of the myth he returns to the world to sing sad songs, the mad Bacchae tear him to pieces and send his severed head sailing down the river on a harp. To this day the head floats down the river singing mournful songs. It is rather reminiscent of the death of Osiris in Ancient Egypt. He too was torn to pieces, which were then scattered throughout the world. Orpheus is a symbol of liberation, realization, and assimilation.
